It appears spring has sprung!
Since the last website update, we've had a wonderful recital, a practice contest, and each student has continued to make great progress. Miss Abigail has been busy organizing all of the studio's music so that students can have more songs to choose from. Another project has been recording student's performances and burning them to cds. It has long been a dream for us to be able to record students' songs for their use and that dream is coming closer to reality. Of course, it can never be a completely professional recording studio without a soundproof room, but Lord willing we'll be able to make decent recordings.
Another project we're working on is to have teacher recordings of students' current songs up on this website so that they'll be able to come and hear what their songs should sound like any time.
Other items of note:
The spring recital will be held Saturday, April 23rd at 5:30, location TBD.
Frank Basile has recently begun studying piano at Poirier Studio of Music (PSM). Frank is well known throughout Florida for his drumming, but he also does some recording work and hopes to someday open a proper recording studio here in Fernandina. I mention this because Frank recently brought his equipment to PSM and made some recordings of Miss Abigail, which will be posted on the "Music for Special Events" page. You can find Frank online at www.FrankBasile.com and at/www.livestudiodrums.com.

Does your baby need jazz lessons?

You've seen the tiny prodigies on TY and YouTube. And you've been looking forward to the Amelia Island Jazz Festival (Oct. 3-10) for months. Watching your little one bang pots and pans or on the piano, you may wonder when it's time for music lessons. How early is too early to start? That depends on the child and the family, says Abigail Poirier, Amelia Island Montessori music director and founder of the Poirier Studio of music in downtown Fernandina. "For most families, four to six is a good age for [beginning] individual lessons, depending on the child's maturity level." Poirier, who teaches group classes for children as young as 18 months at Amelia Island Montessori, notes that the ages of two and three are when children are developing their individuality and [music lessons] can turn into a power struggle. "At five or six, the child is generally mature enough to focus on individual lessons. If your child can receive correction and focus on one task for 15 minutes, then he is ready. If your child is asking to play an instrument, then he is most likely interested in music." Born into a musical family, Poirier began learning piano from her mother at the age of five and was asking for lessons in other instruments by age seven, when she began studying violin. Outside of formal training, there are many ways parents can encourage a love of music, says Poirier. "You can play good music from conception on. I would recommend classical/instrumental music for young children since there is so much evidence that this type of music is most helpful to brain development. Find music you like, play it often and with enthusiasm! As children get older, you can gradually introduce your favorites and explore new types of music together." One of the best and most enjoyable ways to bring music into your children's lives is to attend live performances together. Fortunately, our area has a lot of opportunities to hear everything from jazz to bluegrass, from country to chamber music, often outdoors and at no cost. "Live music is just that- alive- in a way no recordings can match," says Poirier. Experience it for yourself at the free "Sounds on Centre" Community Concerts the first Friday of every month from May-October.
